Headquartered in Shelter Cove, CA, our company is comprised of roughly 50 associates, each with credentials ranging from multiple Doctorates to high-school drop-outs (we provide GED training and robust academic support to all associates as a benefit). We are a practically-minded, high-energy group of scientists, engineers, and dreamers, who want to make the world a better place.
The history of Widetdyne can be traced back to the cancellation of the Superconducting Super Collider in 1993. At the time of that projects’ cancellation, a number of our Executive Team were in the process of pursuing careers in Physics Research, with the implied ability to leverage the SSC at a later date. Thus, with the cancellation of the SSC, many of these students had their world-views altered, literally overnight.
Because the core founders of Widgetdyne were all pursuing the same general avenues of study, they stayed in loose touch with each other over the following years. Some stayed in Physics, some drifted into Engineering, Communications, or other disciplines. Yet, all still felt the sting of a life’s dream unfulfilled, simply because the tool required for Big Science had been cancelled by a nation too short-sighted and budget-conscious to see the long-term benefits of the SSC.
At a reunion in the fall of 2002, this core of associates held a debate on the topic of scientific development, ethics, and what level of personal gratification each felt as a result of their life’s work to date. As a result of that discussion, their paradigm was changed: instead of working Big Science that would have little direct impact on the world, they would use Little Science, Big Innovation, and a philanthropic mindset to better the world. Widgetdyne was formed.
Since that time, Widgetdyne has grown from the 22 core members to our current size. Our turnover is an impressive 1% since we began.
Our campus headquarters, completed in 2004, provides a communal
environment for our lab facilities, theoretical division, computer arrays,
and approximately 75% of our manufacturing plant – as well as housing
for those associates who elect to live onsite.
